Scientists also collaborate with citizens in historical research projects, even if it is about 19ths century culture. . The B-magic research project investigates glass slides used in a ‘magic lantern’ to study Belgian’s cultural history. As collections of ‘magic lanterns’ are widespread, historians work together with different actors to collect as many slides as possible. . Picture by @griethendrickx

Have you noticed this tiny but brightly colored beetle around? Meet the Six-spotted Zigzag Ladybug (Cheilomenes sexmaculata), commonly found in tropical and subtropical Asia and Australia. It is identified by its shiny and brightly colored elytra (wing casing) in various shades of yellow or orange, decorated by patterns of black lines, dots, and zigzags. It is a voracious predator even during its larval stage! Freshly emerged larvae can consume unhatched eggs, while adults feed on aphids as well as mealybugs, mites, and other soft bodied insects – many of which are considered pests in agricultural areas. Adult Six-spotted Zigzag Ladybugs have been observed to eat anywhere between 22 – 38 aphids in 48 hours! Scientists all over the world are studying the potential of this beetle as a biological pest control agent to reduce the need for chemical pesticides. Isn’t it amazing how something so tiny can help us protect our crops and ensure food security? #sixspottedzigzagladybug #integratedpestmanagement #smallbutterrible #aphidophagous #urbanecology #campusbiodiversity #citizenscience #theateneowild

BEE SPOTTING // getting into April, closer to Easter and bee spotting should be in full swing as the days get warmer! Every day I notice a few more - having a little rest under some leaves, looking for a nesting spot in the ground, having a feed on a flower like this buff-tailed bumblebee. We had a tree bumblebee (noticeable ginger thorax 😍) inside the house having a chill out who is back in the garden now! Keep an eye out for the bees going about their business 🐝 • • • • • #thescottishcollective #scotland #bee #scottishbees #ig_scot #pollen #nature #bumblebee #wildlifelovers #conservation #glasgow #dailydoseofnature #invertebrates #dailywalk #wildlifeconservation #noticenature #urbanwildlife #animals #dandilion #environment #femalescientist #citizenscience #walkscotland

We've had some rainy days in Sydney lately; you may have noticed some 🍄 have grown around. . There are fungi in virtually every habitat. It is estimated that NSW has approximately 36,000 different species in a vast array of shapes, colours, sizes and textures. . Did you know the body of the fungus usually isn’t visible and it consists of large filamentous threads? 🤯, so what you see in this pic is in fact 'the fungus fruit' and the reproductive structure🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄 #citynaturechallenge2020 #citynaturechallenge #citynature #cncsydney #atlasoflivingaustralia #inaturalist #fungi #sydney #rainydays #mushrooms #citizenscience #biodiversity #bioblitz #nature #observations

Campus is full of action at present. Just now, i received this clip from Prashant, one of the security guard. Green Vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta/ हरणटोळ) feeding on garden lizard. It is a wonderful documentation and rare too for our campus. This is arboreal snake feed on frogs, lizards, other snakes and small birds too. It is mildly venomous and tend to shy away from humans. One should not disturb snakes if you see them in their habitat and if it is feeding or already eaten and resting then it is absolute no zone for us. If you try to catch or disturb the snake, it will abandon it's prey which is very hard earned meal for them or will regurgitate the prey if already swallowen. So please understand some table manners for the betterment of reptiles. #symbiosislavale #biodiversityhotspot #biodiversitycell #snakesofinstgram #snakesofindia #greenvinesnake #ahaetullanasuta #gardenlizard #securityguard #citizenscience

You spend your life • trapped in this void • . . Portuguese millipede, m, Ommatoiulus moreleti + White porch spider, f, Cryptachaea gigantipes

F is for FISH Fish can be found on both in estuarine and rocky shore environments. Many are familar with the fish found in estuaries such as flounder, sole and stargazer (though occassionally some subtidal fish species - like yellow-eyed mullet - can get trapped by an outgoing tide). Most people are surprsied to find fish under rocks on the rocky intertidal but New Zealand has lots of intertidal fish! In fact one sixth of the world's triplefin fish (like the one in the photo) are found right here in New Zealand. Other species you may find include; crested blenny fish, twister fish, shortsnout pipefish, lumpfish, seaweed clingflishes, thornfish, olive rock fish and clingfish (of which there is approximately 13 species in New Zealand). You may try to 'save' them by returning to the sea but some species of fish rely on the underside of rocks or the inside of broken shells to lay their nest (yes, that's right fish can have nests too!) Olive rock fish and some species of triplefins and cling fish lay thousands of eggs in these spaces and the males guard them for 1-6 weeks (dependent on species and the temperature of the water) in the winter. The eggs will change colour from pink to yellow to orange as they develop and get ready to hatch. Their survival is dependent on minimal disturbance so make sure if you find any, you turn the rock of shell back over so the nest stays in tack! If you want to find out more about all these species of intertidal fish, head on over to the marine life database (http://www.marinelife.ac.nz). The Collins Guide to the New Zealand Seashores also has lot of information about these fish (and other species) too! https://www.harpercollins.com.au/9781775540106/collins-field-guide-to-the-new-zealand-seashore/ We also like to see 'fishy fotos' so feel free to send them through to us to share! #marinecitizenscience #citizenscience #marinemetresquared #fisharefriendsnotfood #fishyphotos

American Robins have increased bigly 😆 around the city the past couple of weeks as the California (U.S.) variants have come north while our wintering variants have headed towards Alaska to breed.
