#WhaleTales2020 Reflections: John Moran, NOAA Fisheries Biologist in Juneau, Alaska, shared many of the puzzle pieces from Maui's recent low whale presence years. Skinny whales, fewer calves, changes in distribution and behavior – what happened in Alaska? From 2014-2016 a marine heatwave named “The Blob” struck the North Pacific Ocean. The effects of this warm water impacted the marine food web in many ways. The impacts of “the Blob” affected the entire food web. For humpback whales we saw: fewer calves and adult in Hawaii, an increase in entanglements on the west coast, changes in distribution, and poor body condition in Alaska. This really was an incredible talk and we were so lucky to have John to share this eye-opening information with our Maui community! (zoom into the slides!) 🤔 Did you know boat use is one of the major threats to seagrass🌱?⠀ ⠀ Whether its anchoring in seagrass meadows, propeller scars from being in water that is too shallow to actual boat🚤 groundings- all these are avoidable threats that face seagrass. These activities rip up seagrass roots and destabalise the ecosystem, becoming major threats as small scars can become like major roads through the meadow with continued use.⠀ ⠀ Restoration of these can take up to 1️⃣0️⃣ years, as once seagrass is uprooted it can lead to erosion of the sand banks it grows in- Imagine all the work that goes into planting a flower🌼 bed except underwater! ⠀ ⠀ Through greater community outreach, and boater education these are some of the threats that can be easily managed! ⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

The low tide🌊 brings out a whole different perspective👁️ of Roebuck Bay. ⠀ ⠀ The seagrass meadows of our Bay are normally covered but because of the HUGE tides we have here we get to see them in all their glory - But only on the lowest⬇️ of low tides ⠀ Does this look like a Forrest to anyone? ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

Questo virus potrà servire a ristabilire l’equilibrio di tutto il pianeta?🤔 MARINE VIRUSES I was astonished when, during my master degree course @univpm years ago, I learnt how marine viruses are essential for supporting the food web and the ocean equilibrium. Viruses are considered at the edge between life and non-life. They basically live and proliferate infecting living cells. Infecting microbial cells, marine viruses break their membranes allowing the release of huge quantities of nutrients in the ocean, and sustaining the bases of the food webs. Viruses controls the life, but they are essential for the ocean health. Coronavirus is controlling our life in this moment… Could it be essential for the global health of our planet? #coronavirus #covid_19 #covıd19 #covid #iorestoacasa #lockdown #italylockdown #marineviruses #ocean #foodchain #foodweb #marinefoodchain #marinefoodweb #ecosystem #ecosystemequilibrium #nature #biogeochemicalcycle #microalgae #marinebacteria

🤔 Did you know just like plants on land, Seagrass 🌱is an important sediment stabiliser? ⠀ ⠀ Because Seagrass has roots (unlike seaweed) it is able to help seabeds retain their structure in the moving tides 🌊helping to create a constant habitat for different sea creatures, big or small! ⠀ ⠀ It constantly is building and securing sediment which can buffer the coast from erosion, storms and flooding.⠀ ⠀ This is one of seagrass' unique strengths! 💪⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

And that's a wrap! 🎁 ⁣ ⁣ Thanks you so much to all the volunteers - new and experienced, young and old for bringing their keen eyes👀 and winning🎖️ attitudes to the Roebuck Bay mudflats for the past 4 mornings! ⁣ ⁣ Now to get back to the desk and start processing all this priceless data⁣ ⁣ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #BroomeSeagrass #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methidology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BroomeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome⁣

Not a hug! See how the crab has his arms / claws expanded? That's so there's less chance the fish can get him into its mouth. The fish here is the fabulously camouflaged, and therefore great ambush hunter, the Red Irish Lord. The crab is a mature male Sharpnose Crab. This crab is one of the species in the NE Pacific Ocean that "decorates" itself with the life around it to be camouflaged. And, WERE I to be anthropomorphic, I would suggest the fish even looks a little "caught in the act" in this image. 😉I took the photo and moved on so as not to further influence the outcome. Red Irish Lord = Hemilepidotus hemilepidotus; up to 51 cm. Sharpnose Crab = Scyra acutifrons to 4.5 cm across the carapace in mature males, females much smaller with smaller pinchers as well. ©2020 Jackie Hildering #TheFoodChainItBites #YouWantAllOfThis ? #Crab #Fish #NEPacificOcean #RedIrishLord #CamoCrabs #Camouflage #MarineFoodWeb #DefenseStrategies

🤔 Did you know that Seagrass🌱 IMPROVES water💧quality?⠀ Not only does it absorb nutrients and reduces turbidity (makes water more clear), studies also show that seagrass can also absorb all different types of Bacteria🤢- Including ones that come from humans!⠀ ⠀ If you love your crystal clear clean oceans then you have to love Seagrass! 😍😊 ⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

Due to the construction👷 at Town Beach we will be meeting in a slightly different place than usual.⠀ ⠀ Our ever brave volunteers will have to face a whole new environment..... THE PLAY GROUND 😱 😂 ⠀ ⠀ You better make sure to come down on Tuesday so you don't miss this once in a lifetime chance 🤣 😁 ⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

Get EXCITED!!! Only 5️⃣ more sleeps😴 till our first monitoring event for the year 😁 😁 ⠀ ⠀ We can all be a bit groggy in the morning so here are the meeting points for each site in case you get lost 😂 ⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

🤔Did you know that turtles🐢 can eat up to 2kg of seagrass🌱 a day?!?⠀ ⠀ Sometimes we find them, like this beautiful Green Turtle, having a rest 😴on the mud flats while we are monitoring. Its always so special when it happens 😊 ⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome

🤔 Did you know that per hectare seagrass🌱 can store 2️⃣ times more carbon than terrestrial (land) forrests🌲🌳?!?⠀ ⠀ AND⠀ ⠀ Despite only making up less than 0.2% of the world’s oceans, Seagrass stores approximately 10% of all carbon buried in ocean sediment every year 😮💪⠀ ⠀ #BroomeSeagrass #FromSeagrassBigFishGrow #RoebuckBay #Broome #SeagrassWatch #CitizenScience #Bioindicator #methodology #research #MarineFoodWeb #LoveFishThankSeagrass #BrommeTime #BroomeLIfe #science #LowTide #TheKimberley #environment #sea #SoBroome #seagrass #SeagrassLove #volunteerbroome
