House finches are a great example of recognizing the exotic at home. They're common enough, but the splash of ruby always makes me stop stare. . #housefinch #birdsofinstagram #birdstagram #birdsofnorcal #birds #birdoftheday #birding #urbanwildlife #birdphotography #bayarea #baynature #gay #queer #gayboy #lgbtbirders #lgbtq #birdnerd #mentalhealth #birdtherapy #getouddoors #socialdistancing #queersoutdoors

Even loud mouths just want to hide in the underbrush sometimes. . Besides this lovely Robin, we saw a family of four Wilson's Warblers (plump, bright yellow all over with a black cap) hopping around tree branches at eye level. The little ones were fluttering their wings and following their parents very closely. As bright as they are, it was impossible to get a good shot, even after 10 minutes with them right in front of me. They're just too fast! . #americanrobin #birdsofinstagram #birdstagram #birdsofnorcal #birds #birdoftheday #birding #urbanwildlife #birdphotography #bayarea #gayarea #baynature #gaynature #gay #gayboy #lgbtbirders #lgbtq #birdnerd #queer #mentalhealth #birdtherapy #getouddoors #socialdistancing #queersoutdoor

Camouflage is the name of the game for this coast horned lizard (Phrynosoma blainvillii). Their squat little bodies (for which they're named Phryno - toad, soma - bodied) aren't well adapted for long distance running so when threatened they often make an initial dash & freeze relying on crypsis to keep them safe. If this fails, they have a few more defenses at their disposal - inflating their bodies and tilting to look as big as possible & presenting the broadest side to certain predators (snakes), in an attempt to look too big to eat. To a snake which is gape limited and eats prey whole this is an effective deterrent. Bizarrely they even flip themselves onto their back - why laying upside down with limbs splayed out is effective, I do not quite understand. "Body-flip and Immobility Behavior in Regal Horned Lizards: A Gape-limiting Defense Selectively Displayed Toward One of Two Snake Predators" by Sherbrooke & May (2008) - research even showed that lizards were able to recognize different snake spp & choose to either run or 'flip' based on the species and its hunting strategy. Then these lizards have their horns: How the Horned Lizard Got Its Horns by Young et al. 2004 found that lizard with shorter horns were more likely to be killed by shrikes than longer horned lizards - horns protecting the lizard likely applies for defense against more than shrikes too. Finally in their defensive arsenal is their most famous defense which is primarily saved for canine predators like coyotes & foxes.... the lizard can shoot a jet of blood from its eye, they're fairly accurate and aim for the face of the predator. Studies have shown that something in their blood is quite irritating to these canid predators although when I briefly looked, I didnt find the exact compounds. Well defended little lizards. . . #baynature #CaliforniaNature #californiaadventure #California_igers #californiawildlife #SanFranciscoPhotographer #lizardsofinstagram #yourshotphotographer #laowa #phrynosoma #herpingtheglobe #herpsofig #fieldherping #reptilephotography #hornedlizard #wildlife_inspired #camouflage #tufotonatgeo #natgeoru #hornytoads #lizardlover #lizardsofig #herps #herp #bbcwildlifePOTD

Last week Christian Cooper was threatened by a racist white woman in Central Park just for birding while Black. Then George Floyd and Tony McDade were murdered by police. Now the world is on fire. . I'm here for it. We live in a terrorist police state that brutalizes Black and brown people. That has always been the norm. No more normal, please. Life is too precious. . I had to stay home this weekend, but the uprising has my full support. While I was pacing my apartment Sunday, this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee dropped by the feeder outside my front window for a visit. I won't project too much meaning onto the interaction, but he sure was a welcome sight. . #blacklivesmatter #blm #m4bl #georgefloyd #breonnataylor #tonymcdade #birdsofinstagram #birdstagram #birdsofnorcal #birds #birdoftheday #birding #urbanwildlife #birdphotography #bayarea #baynature #queerbirders #lgbtbirders #lgbtq #birdnerd #queer #mentalhealth #birdtherapy #covid19 #socialdistancing #queersoutdoors

Skunk skull. While on a hike I kept coming across sealed 5 gallon buckets stashed in the bushes. I opened two and was knocked on my ass by the smell of skunk carcass. Finally found one where the lid had already fallen off and the body had decomposed enough that I could get this skull. This stretch of trail was along side a road so I’m thinking maybe all these skunks were roadkill. • • • • • • • #skunk #skunksofinstagram #skull #skullphotography #hikingfinds #baynature #itwasdeadwhenwemet #mammals #teeth #showmeyourteeth #carnivore #natureofinstagram #stayandwander #naturalist #natgeowild #stankyydankyy #bones #roadkill #death #circleoflife #seewildlife #trackandsign #naturephotography #naturetracking #skullcollector #animalcrossing #animalskull #vultureculture #osteology #naturelovers

A young rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) in ambush position among the rocks, perfectly poised to grab one of the lizards that were scampering all over the area. I saw this individual on my 2nd visit to a rattlesnake den site which I had found a few weeks prior when I stumbled across it. About 5 rattlesnakes of varying sizes from adult to yearling basking together near a rock fissure, unfortunately I didnt see them until it was too late and I'd startled them and most quickly retreated into the crack. It was thrilling to find a den as it's where rattlesnakes spend the colder months and then females give birth there as well, often remaining with the offspring for a few days before dispersing into the surrounding habitat for the warmer part of the year. Then returning to the same site again in fall. I've only found 1 den before in WI of timber rattlers but it was a low snake density site and I never saw more than a pair of snakes there so this is an upgrade! Sadly I wasn't able to return for several weeks by which time the snakes seem to have left. I found this yearling nearby, an adult further away and a small maybe 2-3 year old snake still at the den. I'm very much looking forward to keeping an eye on this site for years to come. . . . . #baynature #CaliforniaNature #californiaadventure #California_igers #californiawildlife #SanFranciscoPhotographer #snake #snakesofinsta #snakelover #snakelife #yourshotphotographer #insituherps #mynikonlife #herpetologia #herpingtheglobe #herpsofig #fieldherping #wildlifeplanet #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #bbcwildlifepotd #herping #crotalus #rattlesnake #rattlesnakesofinstagram #insituherps #viperidae

Parental care is a behavior I love to photograph, especially in animals that we don't usually think of as caring parents - there are many more devoted parents in the animal world than birds and mammals!  This soil centipede in the genus Strigamia is a perfect example.  Centipedes make many people feel uncomfortable as they're fast moving, predatory, and have a bunch of legs... but looking beyond that there are much more interesting aspects to them.  I for one, had no idea about the extent of their parental care until recently.  Not all centipedes exhibit care of their offspring but a significant number of them do, the mother will stay with the eggs cleaning them and guarding them, sometimes even after hatching the parent stays near by for some time attending the young.  This doesn't only protect them from predatory neighbors but the maternal cleaning of eggs and young keeps them free of fungi which would otherwise overtake the eggs. . . . . #centipede #yourshotphotographer #naturegram #wildlifephotography #NikonNoFilter #naturephotography #chilopoda #centipedesofinstagram #centipedes #animalbehavior #laowa @venuslaowa #beautiful_Insects_japan #insectguru #bbcwildlifepotd #macroworld_tr #macro_highlight #macro_mania__ #bayareawildlife #baynature #CaliforniaNature #californiaadventure #California_igers #californiawildlife #SanFranciscoPhotographer #ebrpd #animalfanatics #wildlife_aroundworld #tufotonatgeo #natgeoru

On Monday on a hike @michele.my.belle found this beautiful Pacific Gopher Snake while I was, surprise, surprise, on my knees looking at a mini mushroom. Pacific Gopher Snakes are common, but one of my favorites as they often have a very mellow personality and have a permanent sarcastic smirk. This big mellow snake only would whip its tongue about if one of us gave it’s back a gentle stroke, so that is how these shots were made. .. .. Growing up I was told the tale that gopher snakes ate rattlesnakes but I can’t find little evidence of this. If anything such a big successful snake may decrease food availability for rattlesnakes and thus decrease them in an area. If anyone has evidence though, please add it in the comments. .. .. Occasionally these snakes when threatened will attempt to mimic rattlesnake behavior by coiling up raising the head, hissing loudly and then shaking the tail to make a buzzing noise. It works really well because their skin patterns are similar too. They are constrictors and usually coil up their small mammal prey or simply corner them in their own dens. .. .. I've mentioned before that now that I'm spending more time at home I sometimes find subjects in the small garden behind the building. An old cracked pond that sometimes accumulates rainwater is often a haven for mosquito larvae but I noticed something else in there with them... small and white and about the size of a poppy seed. I'd thought they were water fleas but upon closer inspection it turns out they are a type of crustacean known as seed shrimp. How they got there, I have no idea. But many species here in CA (and elsewhere?) are adapted to vernal pools which are temporary so I imagine that despite the water drying up for most of each year, their eggs can persist in the dry mud until the rains arrive.  A quick look at the literature revealed a survey which found 24 species of seed shrimp in California's vernal ponds so its unlikely I will be able to narrow it down to species.  But they've been a fun challenge to photograph and a critter I've overlooked in the past.  Apparently these miniscule little crustaceans are incredibly well represented in the fossil record, with one of the most complete fossil records of any group of animal. From it we know that they first appeared in the Cambrian, speciated in the Ordivician and became extremely abundant in the Silurian epoch. Their fossilized remains can be used to gather info about the state of the area back then such as salinity and depth of water and more.  And here are their modern counterparts thriving in a puddle in a backyard in Berkeley, CA. . . . #baynature #CaliforniaNature #californiaadventure #California_igers #californiawildlife #SanFranciscoPhotographer #ostracods #yourshotphotographer #naturegram #wildlifephotography #laowa @venuslaowa #macroworld_tr #macro_highlight #freshwaterlife #naturephotography #crustaceans #freshwatershrimp #entomologia #mosquito #mosquitolarvae #shelterinplace #wildlife_aroundworld #tufotonatgeo #natgeoru #macro_captures_ #NikonNoFilter #micronature

This past Saturday, we saw a large Pacific gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer catenifer) dangling limply from the talons of a Red-tailed hawk, one of their top predators. In homage to him, I share a photo of one of his conspecifics, looking fairly majestic and as though he were basking and appreciating the view. (He wasn't, of course, as this photo is not in situ.) 🐍 Likely, the depredated snake was himself basking in some open area when he was spotted and grabbed. Perhaps there was a tussle... Gopher snakes can make a really menacing hissing noise, and may flatten their heads or vibrate their tails if they feel really threatened. It's nice to remember that gopher snakes can sometimes hold their own in these interactions! If you haven't seen them yet, there are some really nail-biting videos in circulation of gopher snakes, snatched by a raptor, managing to wrap themselves around their would-be predator and constrict it. 🐍 #gophersnakes   #gophersnake   #herping   #wildlifeplanet   #baynature   #CaliforniaNature   #californiaadventure   #California_igers   #californiawildlife   #colubridsofinstagram   #colubrids   #snake   #snakesofig   #snakeofinstagram   #reptiles   #reptilesofinsta   #reptile   #snakes
