What links doughnuts and the trenches in World War One? The Salvation Army! During the First World War, Salvation Army women, known as ‘doughnut lassies’ used to create and deliver doughnuts to troops on the frontline to help boost morale. . This Doughnut Day, our church in Street, Somerset, is carrying on that tradition by making and delivering 600 doughnuts to vulnerable members of their local community as a blessing during lockdown. . Louise Melia of The Salvation Army in Street “In light of the pizza deliveries and VE Day cream teas that have proven so popular with the people of Street, we’ve decided to celebrate Doughnut Day during lockdown this year by delivering 600 doughnuts and a piece of fruit loaf to local residents, in the same way that The Salvation Army provided a boost for troops during WW1 and WW2 by serving them doughnuts. We are also busy baking the 60 fruits loaves ready to go in the boxes for Doughnut Day on 5th June.” . . . #thesalvationarmy #salvationarmyuk #salvationarmy #sallyarmy #sallyarmypeople #doughnutday #doughnutday2020 #doughnut #doughnuts #foodstagram #fridayfoods #fridayfood #fridaymotivation #charity #church #faithinaction #somerset #foodie #friday #coronavirus #coronavirusuk #covid19 #dogood #makeadifference

It’s time to end pill shaming - I am not “crazy” because I need medication to balance the chemicals in my brain. You’d never judge someone for taking medication for their physical health problems, so why is mental health any different? And it’s also okay if medication don’t help with your mental health problems, there are so many other techniques to try💖 🌈💖🌻 Art by @xletstalkmentalhealth #coronavirus #coronavirusuk #netflix #netflixandchill #netflixshows #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalwellness #mentalhealthadvocate #depressionhelp #depression #depressionawareness #anxiety #anxietyrelief #anxietyawareness #anxietyproblems #anxietysupport #eatingdisorderrecovery #eatingdisorderawareness #eatingdisordersupport #eatingdisorderawarenessweek #stayhome #staysafe #bekind #loveisblind #gayrights #gaypride #pride #rainbow

▶️ Lancet, NEJM Retract Major Covid/Hydroxychloroquine Papers @TheLancet announced today that it has retracted a highly cited study that suggested #hydroxychloroquine may cause more harm than benefit in patients with COVID-19. Hours later, @NEJM announced that it had retracted a second article by some of the same authors, also on heart disease and COVID-19. The Lancet article, titled "Hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine with or without a macrolide for treatment of COVID-19: a multinational registry analysis" was originally published online May 22. The NEJM article, "Cardiovascular Disease, Drug Therapy, and Mortality in Covid-19" was initially published May 1. Three authors of The Lancet article, Mandeep R. Mehra, MD, Frank Ruschitzka, MD, and Amit N. Patel, MD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, wrote in a letter that the action came after concerns were raised about the integrity of the data, and about how the analysis was conducted by Chicago-based Surgisphere Corp and study coauthor Sapan Desai, MD, Surgisphere's founder and CEO. The authors asked for an independent third-party review of Surgisphere to evaluate the integrity of the trial elements and to replicate the analyses in the article. "Our independent peer reviewers informed us that Surgisphere would not transfer the full dataset, client contracts, and the full ISO audit report to their servers for analysis, as such transfer would violate client agreements and confidentiality requirements," the authors write. Therefore, reviewers were not able to conduct the review and notified the authors they would withdraw from the peer-review process. Read more about this breaking and important story by tapping on the link in our bio. What do you think about this development? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

We have been working alongside some incredible charities that have continued to provide a refuge, care and meals to people that are homeless and struggling through this difficult time. We have teamed up with @chris.kipbags to create and deliver over 500 Kip Bags to people living on the streets. Each bag contains a sleeping bag, a torch, warm clothing and sanitary items. Our founder, Sarah, Duchess of York, said in her interview with @seemehearmepodcast “If I was a rough sleeper I would want to know that someone had thought about whether I had something to lie on, or that on a cold rainy night I had something to cover myself with…which is why we have put these bags together.” Thank you to our partners, we think you are doing a remarkable job. Today marks 11 weeks since schools closed for most, but not for Baby. A handful of children have continued to attend her school and I was told a couple of weeks ago she is the only child who has attended every single day. Week in and week out, with not even a break for Easter or half term. Although she is undoubtedly tired, she hasn't once complained about having to go, even in the beginning when she spent days not speaking to anyone. It broke my heart but she kept on going, those little shoulders suddenly a bit broader and her understanding of the world more mature than I would like. Her grasp of what it is to be a team and support your family and community far greater than many adults I know. Next week most of her friends will be returning to school, back to their class teachers, albeit in smaller groups. But Baby won't, she will remain in an even smaller, isolated, key worker group. I have no idea how to explain to her why all her friends are going through one door but she must use another. Why they get to have lessons with her teacher but she doesn't. Why they will be talking to each other, catching up and sharing stories, but she won't. Parents worry about their child feeling left out when they don't get invited to a birthday party and here I trying to protect her from feeling excluded from her entire school life. My guilt levels are through the roof knowing that me being a single parent and a key worker has left her at a disadvantage, segregated from her friends, with inferior provisions. A person being seen as a 'contamination risk' first and a child second. It sits very uncomfortably with me that the country is covered in signs thanking key workers, people clapping on their doorsteps and proudly displaying homemade posters in their windows, yet the children of those same people being thanked are penalised because of the vital work they are doing. "Thanks for all your hard work but your child might be a bit too germy for our liking." Not all heroes wear capes, some are 118cm tall and wear jelly shoes.

On this week’s front cover, we talk to kids who have gone back to school after #coronavirusuk lockdown, and we speak to those who haven’t. We are always there to give children a voice when everyone else is speaking for them 📢 . . . #firstnews #happynews

Talk about something that can be read both ways! This is the news that face masks will be compulsory on public transport from the 15th of June onwards. Another new law will make it illegal to play the song “Mask Off’ by Future, except in Barnard Castle, Durham, Islington and No.10 Downing Street. Hip hop helps Him concentrate. Head to witwo.net today to hear why posturing should not be mistaken for progress. “Amongst those sharing images of themselves ‘blacked up’ on social media was the Austrian teenager shown below. You couldn’t make up this make-up madness. It’s hardly a trend, but misfiring such as this takes many forms, some much less blatant, most painfully lazy. There are too many tactless pleas for approval.” #borisjohnson #chriswhitty #coronavirusuk #masksuk #ukcovid

We need your help to carry on supporting the horticulturists that maintain the UK's parks, which have been so vital to our physical and mental health during lockdown. To support grounds staff who have kept pitches and courses in top condition for the last three months even though a ball didn't touch them. To support those affected by garden centre closures and cancelled flower shows. To support horticulturists who have lost their jobs or fallen ill and become unable to work due to coronavirus. We can't do it without your help. Please donate today. 📱Text HORTAID to 70085 to donate £5. Thank you.
