Woodlands require habitat management to ensure they can support a high abundance and diversity of species. 🌳 At Durlston we have been carrying out works to vary the age structure and increase light density between the trees - this will enable more plants to grow and improve the woodlands value for wildlife! 🌱 To monitor the effect of these changes, we have been surveying ground flora at fixed point quadrats throughout the woodland. This involves identifying every plant growing within a set area and counting each one or calculating the coverage. 📝 It's a really great way to learn lots of new species but can be very difficult when plants are only just beginning to sprout, or when trying to differentiate between grasses... I'll take flowers over grasses any day 🙄 #bbcearth   #countrysideranger   #natureblogger   #conservationist   #natureconservation   #protectnature   #ecologist   #wildlifeconservation   #earthscience   #inaturalist   #protecttheearth   #britishwildlife   #britishnature   #ukwildlife   #naturenerd   #plantsurvey   #thingsrangersdo #conservationvolunteers #lovewhatyoudo #workoutdoors #conservationphotography #ecology   #woodlandmanagement #forestfocus #hugs_for_trees   #wildflowerhour #springflowers #plantnerds #talkplantytome #plantsplantsplants

So... How's your self isolation bird list coming along?! Mine's slightly stagnated at 18...with goldcrest being the most recent addition (by ear only).👂👀🐦✔️⁣ ⁣ So that's 18 birds... and then this guy 🤣😍 I was sat out in the sunshine working last week, and heard a rustling on the feeders behind me. Normally the sound of scrabbling means my house sparrows, blue tits, Dunnocks or even greenfinch are visiting my buffet... But no. ⁣ ⁣ You can imagine my surprise, seeing this furry butt perched, and GUZZLING seed down in the afternoon sun ☀ . He sat there happy as Larry (maybe that's his new name?!) for 10 mins or so. I've lived in this house for a year now, and never seen his face before! Just goes to show there's a whole heap of wildlife hiding in those nooks and crannies that we never normally see.⁣ ⁣ For now... I'll be keeping my peepers peeled and my ears pricked for new ticks on this garden list! Possibilities include chiffchaff, blackcap and sprawk, so fingers crossed! What's the best beaky friend you've spied so far during this weird old time?⁣ ⁣
