Burmese pythons are such beautiful snakes. The Burmese python is native to Southeast Asia. Here in South Florida, they are established as an invasive species. They have accounted for the large decrease in native mammals in the Southern Everglades. Where there has been raccoons, opossums, and deer, the pythons have eaten and wiped out most of the populations. These large constrictors also compete with alligators, and often times will end up EATING them! One should try to wrap their head around that! The alligator, what is supposed to be the top predator of the Everglades, constantly falling victim to the Burmese pythons! Although it is not the fault of the pythons, it is important to realize that having the “need” to own large exotics comes at a price. That price is responsibility. The pythons are spreading because of the irresponsible people that released them many years ago. There are also people that intentionally spread them! Those people will catch a python(s) in one location, and release them at another. That’s ridiculous! At this point in time, the Burmese python is here to stay. It is now a matter of keeping their numbers at a minimal. Photographed with a Nikon D750, SB600 flash, and a 10-18mm fisheye lens. #burmesepython #largeconstrictors #constrictor #exotic #invasive #species #snake #animalsofinstagram #animal #animals #wildlife #conservation #jaw_dropping_shots #photography #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #florida #southflorida #everglades #nikon #nikonusa #nikonnofilter

Prothonotary Warbler. My favorite. 💛😀 May 24.

Is #TossBackTuesday a thing? If not, it should be! Therefore, I am using this day to share a “happy” hippo photo I took back in 2009 when I was in Botswana, on the Chobe River. The section of the Chobe River where we spotted these basking beauties was along the northern edge of Botswana, not far from where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe come together. * Here are some #AnimalFacts from the @SanDiegoZoo’s webpage: * The name “hippopotamus” comes from a Greek word meaning “water horse” or “river horse.” But hippos are not related to horses at all—in fact, their closest living relatives may be pigs or whales and dolphins! There are two species of hippopotamus: the river, or common, hippo and the much smaller pygmy hippo. * Hippos have unique skin that needs to be kept wet for a good part of the day. Staying out of the water for too long can lead to dehydration, so hippos try to remain in water during the day. They don’t have true sweat glands; instead, hippos secrete a thick, red substance from their pores known as "blood sweat," as it looks like the animal is sweating blood. But not to worry! The blood sweat creates a layer of mucous that protects hippo skin from sunburn and keeps it moist. * Despite the hippos' cute appearance, they are among the most dangerous and aggressive of all mammals. Their canine and incisor teeth grow continuously, with canines reaching 20 inches (51 centimeters) in length. Hippo males especially use their canines for fighting. To ward off enemies, a hippo may yawn, scoop water with its mouth, shake its head, rear up, lunge, roar, grunt, chase, and make a loud wheezing sound, all of which are threat displays. A hippo can kill people if it's provoked or feels threatened. But the impressive tusks and canine teeth are used mainly for defense or fighting with other hippos. * If you’re still reading - thank you for being curious about hippos and wanting to learn more. Do you have a question about hippos? I might have an answer for you. . . . . . #RiverHippo #RiverHippos #Hippopotamus #EndExtinction #AfricanAnimal #Botswana #ChobeRiver #SanDiegoZoo #MakeADifference #wildlifeconservation #AwesomeAnimal #savingspecies #wildlifeconservat

Wow, I have my own bee hive !!! Okay, okay so there are only two bees using it and it is a hole in the path to my front door, so it's a nest rather than a hive, but hey, this is great who needs BBC spring watch.? 😊 The concrete mortar has broken up and come out between the slabs and laid concrete, I was going to fill it in last autumn but it never stopped raining, I am pleased that I never got around to patching up the cracks as it is home to two bumblebees. Watching them back and forth from my bee and butterfly rich plants is thrilling. I had see the beesnquite a few times around the area but only noticed them using the hole as a nest. #bumblebee #bees #beesofinstagram #wildlife #gardenwildlife #gardenwildlifeuk #bufftailedbumblebee #yellowtailedbumblebee #beesnest #naturelovers #nature #wildlifeconservation #britishwildlife

@charlysavely here again! For my last post I wanted to introduce you to Bakari. One of the few leopards at @lionsrock_sanctuary. As a cub, Bakari’s only purpose during his very first months in a zoo was to take pictures with visitors during christmas events & parties. He was just a prop & after the event, he was no longer needed. At the young age of only 2.5 months, he was rescued & lived at his temporary home at @felida_bigcatcentre, a big cat centre in the Netherlands, which eventually was taken over by @four_paws_international in 2013. He was lucky enough to have a bigger leopard-appropriate enclosure built for him at @lionsrock_sanctuary & this is where I met him. He used to be very human friendly, but now he has returned to his wild nature & no longer wants to be around humans, which is a good thing. So glad he is finally wanted & taken care of 🐆🧡 #africanamazing #wildlifeseekers #igs_africa #wildliferescue #exclusive_animals #wildlifetour #wildlifefriend #planet_of_animals #wildlifetattoo #wildlife #animalsofinstagram #natgeowild #wildlifeconservation #wildlifecentral #wildlife_photography #wildlife_in_bl

. 🌱⭐ #MiniForest a collaborative campaign between the youth of Faridabad, India, Samarrth Khanna (GMFER's wonderful representative in India), the people of Faridabad & GMFER.⁣ ⁣ 🌱⭐ *SHARE* to amplify this wonderful work. Intact forests, intact biodiversity, carbon capture & beneficial to butterflies, elephants, rhinos & all life. ⁣ ⁣ 🌱⭐ Indicators of a healthy ecosystem. Yes, research says that butterflies are indicators of a healthy ecosystem & here at the Mini Forest Faridabad so far we have recorded the presence of 25 species of butterflies & as earlier before the team of youngsters took up the rewilding work here it was a garbage point with no butterflies at all but in just a few years various species have come back to this place & some have also started breeding here.⁣ ⁣ 🌱⭐ Healthy ecosystems are not just helpful for these sensitive creatures like butterflies but also for humans as they not just sequester carbon, give oxygen but also keep a check on various diseases. When humans take part in activities like forest bathing we are exposed to a lot of good microbes which help us build immunity to fight diseases & these healthy ecosystems also prevent deadly viruses from jumping species or changing hosts by reducing the stress on species & helps in maintaining balance which is now being disturbed due to human activity. Diversity among species makes ecosystems, forests & habitats sustainable as in nature plants, microorganisms & wild animals are depended on each other but due to the wildlife trade, there has been a big decrease in the population of various wild animals & plants which is disrupting all this. We need to put an end to the wildlife trade not just to save a particular group of species from extinction but also to ensure that our ecosystems remain sustainable & our earth remains liveable for us, our future generations & the creatures with whom we share this planet⁣ ⁣ 🌱⭐ Pic Credits: Samarrth Khanna⁣ .⁣⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #MarchAgainstExtinction #WildlifeConservation #endangeredspecies #GMFER #extinction #conservation #endangeredanimals #wildlife_photography #protectwildlife #instawildlife⁣ #forest #butterfly #butterflies

The Cryptic Chameleon (Calumma crypticum) is also known as Blue-legged Chameleon. The colouration shows that this other common name is not very cryptic. However, I also tried to make a cryptic image of this chameleon. 😉⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ © 2020 Ronald Zimmerman. Out in the field, we take more than just #watersamples and #soilsamples . Our team of community scientists make observations about our environment! This can range from describing how many shrubs are present, if our samples are more sandy or gravel-like, and even what noises we hear around us! Be sure on your next SAFE walk or trip outdoors to keep an observant eye open for more than your favorite species but instead think of ways to describe the habitat you’re in 💧🧬🧪 • • • • • • • • • #CALeDNA #citizenscience #communityscience #biodiversity #science #eDNA #environmentalDNA #soilsampling #sedimentsampling #geneticsequencing #genomics #research #hiking #californianaturalist #nature #wildlifeconservation #outdooreducation #environmentaleducation #california #russianriver #fieldobservation #urbanwildlife #urbanecology #russianrivervalley

Blue Jay We have numerous blue jays that visit our bird feeders throughout the year; their loud calls signaling their presence. They gulp down numerous peanuts into an expandable throat pouch that allows them to take the nuts and cache them elsewhere for hungrier days. They also cache acorns and can be important for seed dispersal of certain trees, such as oaks. #wildlifeconservation #conservation #conservationphotography #conservationist #wildlifephotography #wildlife_perfection #wildlifeperfection #wildlifelovers #wildlife_photography #yourshotphotographer #birdsofinstagram #birds_captures #birdwatching #birdlovers #naturelovers #naturelover #naturebeauty #naturebrilliance #naturephotographer #naturecapture #naturecaptures #bluejay #backyardbirding #midwestphotographer #wisconsinoutdoors #gardenlife #gardenlove
