Jim Brown is considered to be among the greatest football players of all time, Brown set multiple records in the NFL and was the first player to reach the 100-rushing-touchdowns milestone. Jim brown would lead the Cleveland Browns to an NFL Championship in 1964. Brown’s legacy has also been defined by his support of African American causes and the civil rights movement. In the 60’s, Brown founded the Negro Industrial Economic Union as a means to help black owned businesses prosper. He would also go on to start The Amer-I-Can Program in an effort to help young gang members turn their lives around. Brown was also instrumental in the 1992 peace agreement among rival gangs in Los Angeles after the Los Angeles riots. Brown helped the rival gangs negotiate the peace accords in a formal peace treaty that would go on to become a major component of the decline of street violence in Los Angeles in the ’90s. #BHM #BlackHistoryMonth #WSSCares

John Singleton’s feature film debut, Boyz n the Hood, led to an Academy Award for Best Director, making Singleton the first African-American and youngest person at 24 to win this award. Jackie Robinson became the first African American athlete to play Major League Baseball in the 20th century when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Putting prejudice and racial strife aside, Jackie Robinson led the #Dodgers to win the National league pennant in his first year, earning him the Rookie of the Year award. His success in the league opened the door for other African American baseball players.
